Gregor's Room

Artist Statement:

This piece was inspired by The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. It is specifically a representation of Gregor's room in the story based on the adjectives used to describe the space as well as the feelings it gave off. Colors and shapes were used to represent these feelings. The colors and shape of the mattress are representational of moldy food, something that a bug would love and be stuck on for awhile. If Gregor was in this piece, I would have made him a little cockroach indulged in the moldy mattress. The bed frame is inked with a mix of yellow and brown to give off an old and dirty wood look. The rug is an item that was mentioned in the story. I imagined it as something that soaked up some of Gregor's sadness when he woke up every morning and stood on it, so I inked it with several shades of blue. The spiky headboard is made to represent his privacy. When he first woke up and realized something was extremely wrong, he did not want anyone to come into his room and see him, but they continued to come back and knock. The spiked and jaged headboard serves as a kind of bob-wire fence to Gregor's space. Later on in the story, once his family had discovered what had happened to him, his family did not want him to leave his room because it always caused trouble. With that being said, the spiked headboard can also be the symbolism of keeping Gregor contained. The piece is titled Molding Framework because Gregor is slowly wilting away in this contained space. But, since he is a bug it is more of a sense of molding rather than wilting to represent dirtiness. The whole bedroom serves as the framework of his life, where he compresses all of his feelings of anxiety and sadness. A picture frame was also mentioned as main piece of his bedroom so the title ties into that concept as well.
