Dinner and A Movie

Zephyr Fulfillment
Movie Inspiration: Lords of Dogtown (2005)

Artist Statement:

This piece was inspired by the movie Lords of Dogtown. Each item within the setting represents important factors of the movie that give off particular feelings. The movie took place in Santa Monica during the 70's, a prime surf and skate era. The surf wax is used as a representative of California and the surf scene the characters were indulged in as they grew up. The Vans shoe and shoelace represent the skate scene of California during this time. As the waves became flat and a drought caused all the pools in town to be drained, the Z-boys began skating in the empty pools around Santa Monica to keep busy. This was one of the first sparks of skating that made it so well-known today, so the shoe and shoelace are a very important representative part of this piece. The Jimi Hendrix vinyl and psychedelic background are representative of the time period the movie took place in, the 70's. Hendrix is well known from that particular era, but his songs are also played all throughout the movie, so that particular vinyl was very fitting for this piece. One of the main characters in the movie, Jay Adams, dealt with a major drug problem once he got older. This is portrayed by the spoon and lighter. Due to the fact there is not a syringe and needle there, it leaves the takeaway from these two objects very open, but almost always gives a feeling of sketchiness. The spoon also goes with the knife to represent a table setting. The tattoo machine and ink is representative of the "punk-like" lifestyle all the main characters grew up having, constantly drinking, getting random tattoos, breaking into empty pools, and being mischievous. This lifestyle is what led to some of the drug problems, so it all ties together. The piece is Zephyr Fulfillment because the combination of all of these items and their meanings are what made the Z-boys who they are and what made them so memorable. It is a setting that reflects their life, actions, and feelings, and the combination of it all is what fulfills them.
