Figurative Sculptures

Image
Gratitude (left) Materials: air-dry clay, acrylic paint, wood, fake moss, mini clear quartz and amethyst, wood stain, hot glue  Dimensions of sculpture and base: 6.5in" x 6in" x 6.5in" Greed (right) Materials: air-dry clay, acrylic paint, wood, wire Dimensions of sculpture and base: 3.5in" x 15in" x 3in"  Artist Statement: Both of these figurative sculptures work together to create a three-dimensional idea of gratitude and greed in today's world. The sculpture on the left represents the side of gratitude and the idea that less is more. The sculpture is someone sprouting up from the ground with a rose as a head to show that they are connected to the Earth, as all humans are. The base was made circular to contribute to the organic style of the piece. It is coated with wood stain to make it resemble dirt without actually putting dirt on the base. Another smaller circle is placed underneath the base to give a floating effect to the whole piece. It is accen...

Gregor's Room

Image
Molding Framework Materials: white copy paper, colored ink Dimensions of largest piece: 9in" x 2in" x 6in" Artist Statement: This piece was inspired by The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. It is specifically a representation of Gregor's room in the story based on the adjectives used to describe the space as well as the feelings it gave off. Colors and shapes were used to represent these feelings. The colors and shape of the mattress are representational of moldy food, something that a bug would love and be stuck on for awhile. If Gregor was in this piece, I would have made him a little cockroach indulged in the moldy mattress. The bed frame is inked with a mix of yellow and brown to give off an old and dirty wood look. The rug is an item that was mentioned in the story. I imagined it as something that soaked up some of Gregor's sadness when he woke up every morning and stood on it, so I inked it with several shades of blue. The spiky headboard is made to represent h...

Dinner and A Movie

Image
Zephyr Fulfillment Movie Inspiration: Lords of Dogtown (2005) Artist Statement: This piece was inspired by the movie Lords of Dogtown . Each item within the setting represents important factors of the movie that give off particular feelings. The movie took place in Santa Monica during the 70's, a prime surf and skate era. The surf wax is used as a representative of California and the surf scene the characters were indulged in as they grew up. The Vans shoe and shoelace represent the skate scene of California during this time. As the waves became flat and a drought caused all the pools in town to be drained, the Z-boys began skating in the empty pools around Santa Monica to keep busy. This was one of the first sparks of skating that made it so well-known today, so the shoe and shoelace are a very important representative part of this piece. The Jimi Hendrix vinyl and psychedelic background are representative of the time period the movie took place in, the 70's. Hendrix is well...

Warmth Digital Collage 1080 pixels x 1080 pixels "Kissing, we share one breath, open the sealed fortress of our body to our lover. We shelter under a warm net of kisses." A Natural History of the Senses, Diane Ackerman, p. 108-109 Statement:  This piece was inspired by the term net of kisses used in the book. The digital collage contains lips from men and women, several different races, and even different lipstick colors. When I think of the word net, I think of containment, inclusive, or a group, so I thought it was important to use a variety of lips to give a sense of inclusiveness.  The Inner Identity Posca paint markers, water color, and micron pen on watercolor paper 9in. x 12in. "[They have] an elaborate tattoo technique called  moko . . . One traveler described a tribal chief who prided himself on having spared no visible part of his body: even his lips, tongue, gums, and palate were completely tattooed."   Artist: Louise Despont https://art21.org/watch/new-york-close-up/louise-despont-drawing-from-life-in-bali/ Words/Phrases That Describe The Artist's Work: enlightening and organic Artwork:  https://trendland.com/Louise-Despont-Esoteric-Geometry/ Line: This particular artwork relies on lines. Every line creates a new shape making a geometric yet abstract piece. There is also some repetition in the lines on the bottom and the sides that almost act as a creative picture frame. https://www.artsy.net/artwork/louise-despont-torch-ginger Focal Point/Emphasis: The artwork contains several dull colors in the background consisting of browns, yellows, and greens. The bright red in the middle within the flowers draws your attention to it and contrasts with the rest of the colors making it the focal point.
